This time of year is still pretty cold for the northern cities of Canada, but in the summertime all kinds of plant life are abundant, and yes we mean all kinds.
This past July, summer vegetation was in full swing, and an anonymous “farmer” decided to not discriminate against any kinds of plants, including cannabis. In the town of Swift Current, public planters right on the side of a busy street were found concealing marijuana plants amidst some petunias. Unfortunately word traveled and it didn’t stay concealed for long as Swift Current RCMP ‘swiftly’ showed up to assess the situation and remove the thriving weed plants from the planters. Officers were called to the 200 and 300 block of Central Avenue North one Monday to get rid of them immediately as per orders. “Somebody … dropped some seeds; that would be the most logical reason,” said Swift Current RCMP Staff Sergeant Gary Hodges, “We have no idea of who was responsible for it.” It’s unclear how long the marijuana plants have been growing before being detected, but Hodges also noted it was a type of plant which has a lower THC level than what would be found in medicinal marijuana. Mayor Jerrod Schafer said he often hears compliments about the city’s public planters but has never seen these unlicensed herbs growing there. “When you see all the planters that we’ve got, you may just not take notice of what was in there,” Schafer said. All of us here in California think they were a fantastic addition to the public flowers growing up there. Kudos to our mystery farmer, maybe you can go plant another crop in a more discreet spot!
